North Georgia Background Northwest Georgia is neighbor to Chattanooga, Tennessee, just across the state line.Part of this area was formed in 1833 from one of the ten original counties of the Cherokee Land Lottery. Later in 1863 the Civil War focused attention on this rural area for three violent days of fighting. It is home to one of the largest and oldest national military parks (Chickamauga/Chattanooga).Rich soil, favorable climate and abundant moisture combined to make this area a prosperous farming section for many years. In recent years the textile industry has contributed greatly to North Georgia's economy where large and small mills employ over 6,000 people.
