Recreation and Culture

Welcome to Chattanooga where family recreation is abundant and cultural opportunities abound. All of this is easily accessible and enjoyable for all.

Ross's Landing

Imagine a four-acre tract in the downtown area featuring the world's largest freshwater aquarium, an IMAX 3-D theater, and within walking distance of the Creative Discovery Museum for children, and a boat launch on one of the most majestic rivers. Welcome to Ross's Landing Park and Plaza. This area gives you the feeling there is much to do in the downtown area - which is precisely the way it is in Chattanooga!!

Tennessee Aquarium

Picture it! A twelve story building filled with more than 7,000 animals representing 350 species of fish, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians from all over the world. All this is to enhance the understanding, conservation, and enjoyment of rivers. The Tennessee Aquarium is the only aquarium dedicated to the study of freshwater ecosystems. Many of the exhibits are walk-through terrariums, where you will see displayed freshwater flora and fauna to produce a realistic effect of being part of the exhibit.

IMAX 3-D Theater

As its advertising slogan suggests - this is 'so real, it's unreal!' the IMAX experience completely involves the audience in the action. Put on the 3-D glasses, sit back and enjoy being part of our spectacular world in a very personal way. An environmental education center for school children accompanies the theater and offers interactive learning programs that complement the educational nature of the films.

Creative Discovery Museum

Have you ever climbed into a sculpture? Or dug for dinosaur bones? Your children will - at Chattanooga's Creative Discovery Museum. The 42,000 square-foot museum is a place where kids learn about their world hands-on by creativity and individual exploration. Real-life artists, musicians, inventors and scientists guide visitors through interactive exhibits, answer questions and encourage children to take part themselves. They will find an Artist's Studio, an Inventors's Workshop, a Musicians's Studio and a Scientist's Field Laboratory.

Hunter Museum of American Art

Come tour the galleries and experience the excitement of seeing an original Andrew Wyeth painting, the warm colors and atmosphere of a Mary Cassatt, the character in a John Singer Sargent portrait and much more. The permanent collection on display is regarded as one of the most important gatherings of American art in the southeast. Also, find out what's new in the art world at one of the 30 or more touring shows each year.

Bessie Smith Hall

Named in honor of the Chattanooga-born 'Empress of the Blues,' Bessie Smith Hall was designed to transform its neighborhood into a lively cultural and artistic center. The Hall is located in the Heritage Center. It is a 23,000 spuare foot facility that features a 264 seat performance hall, a fully equipped catering kitchen, a resource library, rehearsal rooms and a permanent exhibit about the legendary Ms. Smith.

Tennessee Riverpark

Perhaps the most visible element of Chattanooga's effort to preserve natural beauty is the Tennessee Riverpark - a continuous circuit of parks, trails, and landmarks stretching 22 miles from the Chickamauga dam on the Tennessee River through downtown Chattanooga to Moccasin Bend. The Riverwalk currently links the Tennessee Aquarium and Ross's Landing Park and Plaza, the Chattanooga Rowing Center, Centre South Riverport Industrial Park, the historic Bluffview Arts District and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus. This unique Riverwalk provides a lovely setting recreation, education and entertainment for more than a million residents and visitors annually.

Shopping

Shopping is abundant in Chattanooga and the surrounding areas. The largest shopping center in the state (as of 1998) is located here - Hamilton Place Mall with anchor stores including Dillards, Proffitts, J. C. Penneys and Sears along with an eatery and specialty stores too numerous to mention. Of course there is shopping in each area of the city including downtown with its revitalized area. In all there are 60 shopping centers - large and small - in the area. A number of outlet malls are within easy driving distance of the city, also.
